Fifty years of Islington People’s Rights

10th July 2020 by bootleweb

IPR @ 50

Founded in 1969, Islington People’s Rights celebrated its 50th anniversary with a programme of events and activities, from November 2019 – March 2020. This page documents the programme, which sought to demonstrate the impact of IPR’s work over the past five decades, and highlight the organisation’s ongoing commitment to reducing poverty and the effects of debt in Islington.

Exhibition at Islington Museum

From 2 November 2019 – 21 January 2020, an exhibition at Islington Museum charted IPR’s development over the past five decades in the context of ongoing welfare reform and its continuing work to meet the needs of local residents.

Attracting 4,379 visitors to the museum, the exhibition featured a timeline of the past five decades recording the ever changing landscape of the welfare system and how IPR has evolved in response. Photographs, archival material and statements from both staff and recipients of the organisation’s services brought the timeline to life.

Highlights included a display of the 1978 handbook published by IPR; an extract from Ken Loach’s 2016 film ‘I, Daniel Blake’; an interactive allowing visitors to experience completing a Universal Credit claim form; and a display of ceramist Raewyn Harrison’s ‘Protest Bottles’, including a group of newly commissioned bottles with messages written by IPR staff, trustees and clients.

Commemorative Booklet

The exhibition content was also published in form of a commemorative booklet, available to download here.

Exhibition at Islington Museum

Islington People’s Rights (IPR) has been working for half a century to improve the lives and futures of people in the borough. By offering specialist, independent advice on welfare benefits and debt, IPR seeks to tackle problems which, if left unchecked, can dramatically affect people’s lives.

From 2 November 2019 – 21 January 2020, an exhibition at Islington Museum charted IPR’s development over the past five decades in the context of ongoing welfare reform and its continuing work to meet the needs of local residents. Today, over a third of Islington’s population live in poverty meaning that there remains a continued and growing need for IPR’s services.

IPR Annual Review 2019

21st November 2019 by bootleweb

Photo of disabled personDownload a copy of our IPR Annual Review 2019 (PDF)

Acting Chair’s Report, 2019

After yet another busy year I’m very pleased to introduce our 2018-2019 Annual Review. First some headline figures for the year:

  • One to one support provided to over 2,500 people
  • IPR helped over 120 clients win benefits tribunal appeals
  • Over 75% of IPR clients are disabled
  • We increased the incomes of numerous clients, totalling over £1 million

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of IPR. The funding environment in which we exist is as challenging as ever and it feels a significant achievement to have survived as long as we have. This year we continued to develop our services benefiting the most vulnerable members of the community. This includes protecting many families and others against some of the very real problems associated with the roll out of Universal Credit.

Particular thanks must go to the London Borough of Islington for their outstanding commitment to advice provision in the face of austerity and the tremendous pressure on their budgets.

Thank you also to the trusts and other supporters that have recognised the importance of our work and provided grants and donations. Every penny has been used to transform people’s prospects. Some of their stories appear in the pages that follow.

I must express my gratitude for the contribution of Matt Brown, IPR’s Chair in recent years, who has now moved to Islington Law Centre – a key partner for IPR in Islington. Also to my fellow trustees for their dedication to everything that we do.

Finally, a big thank-you to all of the staff and volunteers that make IPR the catalyst for positive change that it is today. Every day they are working hard to lift people out of poverty and towards brighter futures. As long as that need exists, we will work hard to ensure that IPR is there to help.

Henrietta Cooke
